George Orwell: 1984 - Winston and the proles (Chapter 8)

Big Brother Picture We, the "Leistungskurs-Englisch", decided to interpret one of the most famous English novels of the 20th century in class. We did not want to do it the usual way by simply discussing the text, but to partially interpret it visually. The last project of this kind was about "Dubliners" by James Joyce.
This one is now about chapter 8 from NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR (1984) by George Orwell. 1984 describes a man living in a totalitarian system in which everybody is controlled. The man (Winston Smith) tries to rebel against the system but is finally defeated and made an admirer of his oppressors. Although it is more than 50 years old the novel is still relevant today. Parts of the action might even take place in 2004. We took up the idea of visualizing one of the most important chapters with pictures which will represent the atmosphere. The quotations we use are decisive for the main structure of the chapter.
